“Torres was driving on Turner Street Friday afternoon when he was pulled over by police and arrested. He was wearing a hooded sweartshirt with a skull-head pattern on it, pajama bottoms and fuzzy lion-faced slippers at the time. He was still wearing the get-up when he was arraigned after midnight at Lehigh County prison.”
The nice contest folks at Orbit Books sent me an advance copy of Iain M. Banks’ new SF novel Matter. Banks is one of my favorite authors, so all other books get pushed aside for this. I’ll post a review as soon as I am done.

Well, it’s clear to me that the guy that kidnapped Madeleine McCann is none other than Scalphunter, nefarious member of Mr. Sinister’s Marauders.

Is it me, or does this look like something out of Austin Powers?

I got his CD “Big As Life” as a promo when I managed a record store back in the day and really liked it, but I never really followed his stuff since then. I saw him twice last month at TOAD and he is amazing. Check out his song about Ann Coulter’s lady business: Coulter’s Snatch. I’ve been missing some good stuff.
Not all of these came out in 2007, and some I have read before. Not in any particular order, but Pynchon’s book was amazing. It was a bit arduous to get through, but well worth it, like giving birth to a litter of circus freaks.
- Against the Day, Thomas Pynchon
- Lost Girls, Alan Moore
- Titus Groan, Mervyn Peake
- Deadhouse Gates, Steven Erikson
- The Atrocity Exhibition, J.G. Ballard
- Move Under Ground, Nick Mamatas
- Heart-Shaped Box, Joe Hill
- 20th Century Ghosts, Joe Hill
- Vellum, Hal Duncan
- Shriek, Jeff Vandermeer
Sara and I just went to see The Golden Compass. Overall, I thought it was great. There were a few places where they glossed over elements that are more explicit in the book, particularly that pesky religious element, and the pacing seemed a bit rushed at times, flitting from one setting to another without convincing segues, but the special effects were great, and the acting all around was rather good, especially Nicole Kidman and the girl playing Lyra. I hope they end up making the sequels. The Church needs a few more bees in its bonnet.

I haven’t been posting for a while now. I started a new job in August and things have been very hectic. Things are finally starting to settle down.
Sara and I went to London in September around the time of our anniversary. The main reason we went was to see Brian Wilson debut his new album “Lucky Old Sun” at the Royal Festival Hall on September 16. I have no idea when it is going to be released as an album, but I was able to get a copy of the concert from the premiere night, the 10th. Several great songs, and some beatnik-inspired narrative spoken word bits written by Van Dyke Parks. It was, of course, amazing.
I deleted my old blog and started over with this. I am led by certain persons to understand that it will meet my needs. I will try to import my old posts so no pearls of wisdom are lost to the ravenous aether, but we both know how well that will work.
