Michael Moorcock - SFWA Grand Master

This is great.
“Famed British author Michael Moorcock will be honored as the next Damon Knight Grand Master for 2008 by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The Grand Master represents SFWA’s highest accolade and recognizes excellence for a lifetime of contributions to the genres of science fiction and fantasy.”

My Mother Is Going to Hate This, But…

28 February, 2008 (15:23) | Writing | No comments

My horror story “Angel, Rape, Wheelchair” just sold to Shroud Magazine. It should appear in the May/June Issue #3.
(I still find the title a bit odd. It was just a working title as I wrote the story, but in the end it just seemed to fit perfectly so I went with it.)
As you can tell [...]

Matter by Iain M. Banks

24 February, 2008 (17:52) | Book Reviews | No comments

Iain M. Banks’ latest SF novel Matter is a welcome return to the environs of the Culture, and a welcome return to his estimable form after the earnest, but lamentable The Algebraist. Like most of Banks’ Culture novels, there are vast, powerful alien races; immense habitats housing trillions upon trillions, including the breathtaking interlaced orbital [...]

New Gary Louris Album

22 February, 2008 (16:35) | Mimsymonger | No comments

Gary Louris, vocalist from the seminal alt-country group the Jayhawks (and  alt-country/rock supergroup Golden Smog), has just released his first solo album, Vagabonds. It’s got a little more of a laid back, twangy vibe than some of the later Jayhawks albums, and his voice sounds as great as ever. I just got tickets [...]

Where I Get My Ideas

12 February, 2008 (19:25) | Writing | No comments

It is a simple enough question: Where do you get your ideas?
The answer is simple, too: Everywhere.
But I suspect you may want some more specificity, some meat on the bones, as it were.
Fine, I get many ideas by stealing them from other writers.
More accurately these types of ideas occur to me when I am [...]

Predictions

6 February, 2008 (08:40) | Mimsymonger | 1 comment

Wow, do I suck at predictions. I still think Obama has this in the bag, but it will take a little longer. I didn’t do as badly in the CNN Market as I thought because I had Obama winning the most states, but I took a beating with the California result.
Considering how much I suck [...]

If I Only Knew…

5 February, 2008 (16:59) | Mimsymonger | No comments

My political dreams could be shattered.
Perez Hilton and 50 Cent both support Hillary Clinton.
If I had only known before stepping into the booth and filling in that fated oval. Oh, why couldn’t these wise sages have spoken up sooner?

Obamamania Coast to Coast!

5 February, 2008 (16:43) | Mimsymonger | No comments

Before the results come in, let me cast my voodoo, gut-level, based-on-no-polls- whatsoever predictions into the aether.
Obama wins California by 12% and Massachusetts by 8%.
He ends the night (or the next few days after California’s results come in) with +80 delegates over Clinton.
My windfall in the CNN Political Market would be huge.
My joy would be [...]

The Aviary by Jamie Tanner

1 February, 2008 (09:00) | Book Reviews | No comments

It’s hard to give a sense of how great this book is without showing you all the pictures, but if you close your eyes and repeat over and over “porn, monkeys, robots, cat-headed people, sinister bird-man dolls, amputees, and penguins” then you may get a good sense of what’s going on. Very disturbing graphic novel. [...]
